Born 1954 in Ottawa, Ontario, Peter’s first exposure to art was thru 1960’s television art instructor Jon Gnagy. In due course, he graduated from the University of Waterloo with a bachelors degree in mathematics. After a successful and rewarding career as a software engineer, he has since retired to paint full time.
Always a serious amateur, he has consistently developed his painting and figurative skills over the years. Part of this development was his election into both the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour (CSPWC) and the Society of Canadian Artists (SCA).
“I consider plein air painting to be as much a performance art as a visual one. The painting is merely an “echo” of the act of painting itself. Drips and splatters, colour explosions, loose brushwork and mark-making all combine in mysterious ways to provide an illusion of reality.”
“The process starts with a live model. At some point, usually back in the studio, I abandon the model in favour of the “minds eye” and begin to develop the work based on artistic principals rather than a literal interpretation. This can take the work anywhere and although most pieces are representational, any resemblance to real places (or things) is more coincidental than intentional.”
